‘This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:5-7
In 1 John 1:5-7, we learn a powerful truth: ‘God is light, and there is no darkness in Him’.
This means God is pure, good, and true. If we say we follow God but live in darkness—doing wrong or hiding the truth—we aren’t living honestly.
This passage reminds us that claiming fellowship with God is not enough; our lives must reflect His light. When we walk in God’s light, as He is in the light, we can share true fellowship with each other. We can step into a way of life that mirrors God’s purity, truth, and love. Light can’t be overtaken by darkness, and God’s love and goodness are unchanging.
The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. When we bring our sin to God, we open the way to God’s forgiveness. Forgiveness from all sins, past, present, and future.
Walking in the light doesn’t mean being perfect; it means trusting Jesus to forgive and guide us. Jesus’ sacrifice purifies us and empowers us to live as children of the light.
Advent is a time of waiting, but also a time of aligning our hearts and lives with the light of Christ. This Advent let’s think about where we might still be walking in darkness. Are there things we need to bring to God? Are there relationships we can make right? God’s light shows us the way to love, truth, and peace.
Prayer:
Lord, You are the light of the world, and in You, there is no darkness at all. Shine Your light into the hidden corners of our hearts, exposing anything that keeps us from fellowship with You. Help us to walk in Your truth and to reflect Your light to others this Advent season. Amen.
