Back to school in Nazareth

“Back to school with butterflies in our stomachs, excitement in our hearts, and a little fear of the unknown. But we’re stepping into this new chapter with big smiles, brave hearts, and so much hope for all the beautiful moments waiting ahead.”

Lour and George, preparing for the new school year in Nazareth

Have you ever wondered what school life is like in Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus?

As children across Europe and North America prepare for a new school year, the same is happening in Nazareth. School bags are being packed, uniforms prepared, and families are encouraging their children to embrace the opportunities that education can bring.

For many Arab Christian families in Nazareth, education is highly valued and remains one of the most important pathways to future opportunities.

One of the unique features of life in Nazareth is the linguistic world children inhabit. Arabic is their mother tongue, while Hebrew is essential for daily life within wider Israeli society, and English is increasingly important for higher education and employment. Many children therefore grow up navigating three languages from an early age.

A typical school morning may begin with fresh Arabic bread, labneh, olives, hummus or za’atar before children head off to their classrooms. Like children everywhere, they look forward to seeing friends, meeting teachers and discovering what the year ahead may bring.

Growing Through Challenges

Alongside the normal excitement of returning to school, many children have spent recent years living with the uncertainty created by regional conflict. Schools and educational organisations have increasingly had to support children’s emotional wellbeing, helping them process anxiety, build resilience and continue to thrive despite difficult circumstances.

Please Pray

At Nazareth Trust, it was a joy to spend time with many local children at this summer’s Farah Camp, where they built friendships, learned new skills and explored the story of Jesus of Nazareth.

As these same children return to their classrooms in the coming days, we pray that they will flourish academically, emotionally and spiritually.

As many of our supporters watch their own children and grandchildren return to school this autumn, we invite you to remember the children of Nazareth in your prayers. Pray that they would know peace, opportunity and the hope.
